Safia Abdalla, Northside College Prep class of 2014, has been named a National Winner of the Aspirations Award in Computing from the NCWIT.
Safia Abdalla, class of 2014, has been named a National Winner of the Aspirations Award in Computing from the National Center of Women and Information Technology [NCWIT]. Safia is one of 35 young women from across the nation selected for this honor and the only recipient from Illinois. This caps a three year run for Safia. She won the Illinois State award in 2011, the National Runner-Up award in 2012, and now National winner! She was also recently named as one of the top ten high school computer science students in Illinois by the Illinois Technology Foundation’s 50 For Future program.
Safia is evidence that perseverance and determination yield rewards. A significant factor for her winning is her tireless work in supporting other young women in Computer Science through her work with Chicago Girls in Computing, Northside Robotics, and facilitating middle school computing experience around the city. Last summer while visiting family in Sudan, Safia organized a computing workshop for young women from her home village, providing some with their first ever computing experience!
NCWIT is the largest academic and professional organization for women in computing. The award includes a scholarship, travel to the NCWIT national conference, and most importantly mentoring from some of the top women computer scientists in the nation!
Please join the Northside Computer Science Department in acknowledging and celebrating her wonderful accomplishments! Also on Friday, She was also accepted by Northwestern University’s School of Engineering.
PS: This makes two years in a row that Northside has been honored with a National Winner. Abril Vela, class of 2014, was awarded the National honor last year!
